Ask one follow-up before changing topics

If someone mentions a show, a hobby, or an opinion, a quick follow-up question on that same thing usually goes further than immediately pivoting to something new. It signals you're actually listening, not just cycling through a list of questions.

Share something back, don't just interview them

A conversation where one person only asks questions starts to feel like an interrogation. Answering your own question too — "I've been rewatching the same three shows, what about you?" — makes it a conversation instead of a survey.

Let silences happen

Not every message needs an instant reply, and a short pause isn't a sign the conversation is dying. Forcing constant activity often produces worse messages than a normal, comfortable pace would.

Know when it's actually done

Some conversations run their course after five good exchanges, and that's a fine outcome — not every chat needs to turn into a long conversation or a friendship. If it's naturally winding down, ending it cleanly beats dragging it out.
