How to Spot Fake Profiles and Romance Scams Before They Cost You Anything

June 25, 2026 · 5 min read

Romance scams tend to follow a similar shape wherever they happen: build trust quickly, create an emotional connection, then introduce a reason money needs to move. Knowing the pattern makes it much easier to recognize, even when the specific story is convincing.

The photos look a little too good

Professional-looking photos, often from a single photoshoot, with no casual or candid pictures mixed in, are a common red flag. A reverse image search can sometimes confirm a photo has been lifted from somewhere else entirely.

They move fast — declarations of love within days

Genuine connections usually build gradually. Scam scripts often escalate emotional intensity quickly, because urgency and attachment make people less likely to ask hard questions later.

They avoid video calls, always with a reason

A bad connection, a broken camera, being "too busy" — legitimate excuses happen occasionally, but a consistent pattern of avoiding video calls over weeks is a strong signal something doesn't add up.

Eventually, there's a financial ask

A medical emergency, a stuck shipment, travel costs to finally meet you — the story varies, but the request is the same: send money, gift cards, or financial details. This is the moment to stop, regardless of how convincing the story has been so far.

What to do if you notice these signs

  • Stop responding to any financial request, no matter how urgent it sounds.
  • Don't feel obligated to "catch them out" yourself — just block and report the profile.
  • Report the profile on MeetInPK so our team can review it and act.
  • If you've already sent money, contact your bank immediately and consider filing a report with local cybercrime authorities.

None of this means you should approach every new match with suspicion — the overwhelming majority of conversations are exactly what they appear to be. It just means knowing what the small minority of bad ones look like, so you can walk away quickly if you see it.
